Tibetan Buddhist Mantras

Yesterday, there was a lovely presentation of mantras by some visiting high lamas, here at Puttaparthi.  The mantras were chanted in unison for world peace. Simply beautiful. The contrast of the Vedic Rudram mantras followed by the deep bellowing chants of the Buddhist monks firmly planted an ambiance of purity and peace amongst the devotee who remained sitting in silent absorption of the vibrations that were permeating the ether.

The order of mantras, with their meaning, is the presentation of this post. The Tibetan Buddhist chants were:-

1. Short Mantra of Chenrezig

OM MANI PADME HUNG http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlvtwVN2Ew0&feature=share & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mMRDxTWmJ84&feature=share

Reciting the mantra out loud or silently to oneself, invokes the powerful, benevolent attention and blessings of Chenrezig, who is the embodiment of compassion.

Reciting this mantra just once completely purifies the four defeats of breaking the four root vows of self-liberation and five uninterrupted negative karma.

It is also mentioned in the tantras that by reciting this mantra you achieve the four qualities of being born in the Amitabha Buddha pure land and other pure lands.

2. Medicine Buddha Mantra http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUJucA-mrgE

TADYATHA OM BEKANDZEY BEKANDZEY MAHA BEKANDZEY RANDZA SAMU GATE SVAHA

This mantra eliminates not only the pain of diseases and the major inner sicknesses, hatred, jealousy, desire, greed and ignorance. It too empowers us in overcoming the problems we face and in removing our unhappiness and suffering. Moreover, it aids us in attaining happiness and realisation of the path of Dharma.

3. Green Tara Mantra

OM TARA TUTTARE TURE SVAHA

Chanting of the Green Tara Mantra reduces the forces of delusion in the forms of negative karma, sickness, afflictions of kleshas, and other obstacles and obstructions.

This mantra also helps to generate Bodhicitta within the heart of the practitioner and purifies the psychic channels within the body, allowing a more natural expression of generosity and compassion to flow from the heart centre.

4. Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba Eternal Prayer (by His Holiness – the 17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje)

TSANG SOG LHA WANG SOONG MAY DEN PA DANG

KAR CHOK GAY WE THU DANG NU PA YI

PAL DEN LAMA ZHAB PAD RAB TEN CHING

ZAM LING CHOE KYI NANG WAY KHYAB PAR SHOK

“By the Truth of the Deities, the Protector-Brahma and so forth,

And the Power and the ability of the Virtues,

May the Guru’s life be long and stable,

And may the world be pervaded by the Light of Dharma”

5. Extensive Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha Mantra

6. The Mantra of the Heart of the Perfection of Transcendental Wisdom

TADYATHA OM GATE GATE PARA GATE PARA SAM GATE BODHI SVAHA

7. The Long Dharani of Chenrezig

NAMO RATNA TRAYAYA NAMAH ARYA JNANA

SAGARA VAIROCHANA BYUHA RAJAYA TATHAGATAYA

ARHATE SAMYAKSAM BUDDHAYA NAMAH SARVA

TATHAGATEBHYAH ARHATEBHYAH SAMYAKSAM BUDDHEBHYAH

NAMAH ARYA AVALOKITESHVARAYA BODHISATTVAYA

TADYATHA OM DHARA DHARA DHIRI DHIRI DHURU DHURU ITTI

Reciting the Long Dharani of Chenrezig brings every happiness – the impermanent happiness of our current and future lives, and the permanent happiness of liberation and enlightenment, to each of the innumerable sentient beings, including yourself.
