Effects of Yoga in reducing cancer?

on December 23, 2011

In my earlier post on “Yoga: Hinduism or Health”,  I tried to apply my medical background in physiotherapy to define the health aspect of yoga from the metaphysical philosophy behind it.  I defined health on 5 levels from the gross to the subtle; bio-mechanical, bio-chemical, bio-pranic, bio-environmental and bio-spiritual.

Between the first 3 of these levels I tried to explain how yoga practice effects the musculo-skeletal (mechanical), systemic (chemical) and energetic (pranic) systems.  Along with providing greater internal massaging, oxygenation, de-toxification, internal agni (fire)  and prana to the organs and tissues, I believe that, to a large extent, yoga must depend on the subtlety or maturity of the Yogi in all aspects of life and levels (ie.the level of ether in the mind at the bio-spiritual level).

However, despite these confounding variables, common in any  research, I think it is about time, with such as growing Yoga community world wide, that someone with a science background makes an experimental, longitudinal and clinical study of the effects of Yoga in reducing cancer.

A control study should use a big enough sample size and compare a placebo group with those who practice yoga, and see if there is any correlation to the incidence of cancer.

Alternatively, it could compare a group over time or a random group with their history to note the effects of those who practiced yoga and those who did not.

Lastly, the study could go further to analyse  other factors such as a control of smokers vs non-smokers. These days its all about research; its careful and objective  design, the statistics and what they call validity & reliability (repeatability.

I think it would make an interesting study to promote yoga as a habit from a young age but as you can see I am biased!
